From dark and depressing, to warm and welcoming

Jane and David Featherstone, Havelock North.

Jane and David's kitchen was part of a major renovation of their family home in Hastings. The old kitchen while constructed in quality timber and with plenty of storage, was in the darkest, coldest part of the house. The biggest issue with it was, anyone using the kitchen felt isolated from the rest of the family. It wasn't big enough to allow more than one person to work freely and to put it bluntly, it was so miserable and cold, no-one wanted to spend any time there.

The decision was made to move it, which meant from a kitchen design point of view, it was a blank canvas.

Now the new kitchen with its enormous bench top (Jane claims she wishes she'd gone even bigger) is the focal point of their home and is big enough to have hosted a gathering of sixteen very happy guests last Christmas.

People often say the kitchen is the heart of the home, which does sound cliched, but for Jane and David it couldn't be a more accurate description.
