From the outset, these clients were clear in their vision: modernise the kitchen and remove the restrictive island return that was interrupting both movement and connection. As the natural hub for social gatherings, the existing layout created awkward bottlenecks. Opening up the space became essential to transforming the kitchen into a place that could truly support connection and ease during everyday living and entertaining.

As the project developed, it became clear that accessibility would also play a crucial role in the design. One of the clients had been diagnosed with a degenerative condition, meaning that creating an open, unobstructed layout was not just a preference, but a future-focused necessity. The design therefore prioritised generous circulation space, intuitive flow, and ease of movement, ensuring the kitchen would remain functional, comfortable, and supportive over time.

While the positioning of the larger appliances largely remained, our clients required significantly improved storage, even after a thorough declutter, along with dedicated space for small appliances to keep surfaces organised and efficient. A clear aesthetic direction also emerged - avoid white, embrace natural materials, and incorporate a granite benchtop, inspired by one client’s background as a geologist. Completing the transformation, the renovation extended into the laundry and flooring, creating a cohesive, modern space that balances practicality, personality, and long-term livability.
