Soul Kitchen

This kitchen was created for a lively, design-conscious family: a dad who is both a passionate foodie and vegetable gardener, a daughter who thrives on social connection, and a son whose career as a chef brings high expectations. At the centre of it all is Mum - a wonderfully discerning client with a clear vision. Renovating their rural property, the family wanted a space that delivered flexibility, improved functionality, instant hot water, better storage, modern appliances, and a bold, dramatic aesthetic.

The design centres around a hardworking island that supports multiple activities at once, featuring a cleaning zone, generous prep areas, an efficient waste system, and seating for gathering and conversation. The social zone is thoughtfully separated from the main work area, allowing different tasks to happen simultaneously without disruption. A spacious scullery enhances the layout, offering abundant storage, a second sink, and an additional hot water tap, ensuring the kitchen performs seamlessly even with multiple users.

Materiality plays a defining role, with the family moving from familiar stainless-steel benchtops to durable Dekton surfaces. A bold palette, inspired by a favourite artwork, sits confidently alongside the home’s strong architectural features, while practical details — like hanging pan storage above the scullery sink — add convenience and protection. The result is a kitchen that is functional, expressive, and truly the heart of this dynamic family home.
