Alchemy of space

The ‘alchemy of space’ in design is the process of creating spaces that are more than just functional, but also evoke feelings and enrich the human experience.

Removing a wall dividing the middle of the living and dinning area and adding an island that was functional and low transformed the space. As a result, a good flow between the living, dining, and kitchen areas was produced.

Working with the existing cabinetry meant that most task areas were already created. The clients didn’t want a pantry for their food storage, so we opted to use 2 of the 3 sets of drawers in the island for this. This meant that the food storage was close as the fridge is directly behind these drawers. Off to the right of the sink, we created a coffee bar. By lowering the cabinetry and using a different benchtop, we could show that this was a different part of the space, but still a good task zone.

A 12mm French Oak Negative Detail was specified under the L-Shape and Island. It overhung the doors by 15mm, and then the benchtop that sat on top overhung the Negative Detail by 5mm. This small detail added so much dimension and detail. The island sported a gorgeous corner shelving unit that the clients used to bring colour into the space.
