Brief ‘Mid Century Sunshine’
As custodians of an iconic Mid-Century home the owners are committed to the original house layout which is testament to modernist design principles & widely acclaimed as an example of Bauhaus functionality
Finding a sense of fit by adding new materials and blending them seamlessly with the homes architecture along with honouring the original Architect/Owners design ethics, was no mean feat.
The Design
Our builder was engaged to remove the wall between the Kitchen and the Library/Living, in doing so we claimed much needed space.
Slim Stainless- Steel tops were selected to mimic what went before and to endure the pressure of teenage boys and a truly passionate cook.
As a devotee to all things bright & to duplicate yellow Laminate used elsewhere in the home, the colours came together, adding contrast with white and timber to unite harmoniously with the neighbouring materials
Inspired by mid-century furniture, floating cabinets are anchored by a black square frame that links the black appliances and handles. The frame is repeated on the rear of the island reinforcing the overhang.
With space at a premium a 600mm double oven was included to satisfy the magnitude of food consumed. A Small French Door Fridge/ Freezer adding storage volume and a Double Dish-drawer completing the appliance trio. A feature Rangehood is centralised in the window, complimenting the floating cabinetry. Two Kickboard Drawers and Sink Drawers add supplementary layers of storage to facilitate the stock requirements.
Conclusion
A little ray of sunshine that is both functional and beautiful and an Aesthetic Delight.
