Brief ‘Elephant in the Room’

The initial idea was to add a scullery in the neighbouring laundry to complement the existing kitchen. During the Home Consultation it was clear the Client was open to ideas – the only criteria was Black!!

The wall between kitchen and laundry was removed to open the space. The Negro-Tebas Benchtop now runs seamlessly into the scullery providing ample bench-space for multiple users.

The primary sink on the northern side commands a view over the pool. The freestanding range is located on the eastern elevation creating an optimal prep zone between sink and hob. The Concelo Waste-System is to the right of the sink with dishwasher to the left and completes the cleaning zone. Large drawers sit to the left of the dishwasher making unloading easy.

A second sink along with under-bench bin is in the scullery - an optional location for prep and cleaning for other users. The main fridge is at the scullery entrance, and is easily accessed by all.

Large drawers are positioned around the hob and store bottles, spices, utensils and other cooking equipment needed in that zone.

Black extrusion profiles compliment the streamlined appearance. A black negative detail finishes tall cabinetry to the ceiling – this along with walls painted in Resene Alabaster create visual drama. Scullery cabinetry is finished in black melamine for a cohesive look.

The Island provides informal seating and contains large drawers and under-bench fridge, and discreetly embraces the Elephant in the Room – the necessary structural post!
