Client Brief
The house entry was a dark hallway with the sole kitchen access to the right. The position of the kitchen was isolated from the outdoors and there was minimal connection to the small dining room for social interaction. Both areas were dark and pokey and allowed only one person to be in the kitchen at a time. Entertaining frequent visitors was an awkward affair due to the lack of benchtop and seating space. The clients were desperate to bring some class and sophistication to the space and provide the desired link to their gorgeous tropical garden.
The hallway and return half wall were removed to create a combined kitchen and dining area. This delivered a large open work area and the desired generous social space. A long wide kitchen bench became the star of the room providing preparation, serving and entertainment spaces all in one.
Large sliding stacker doors were added, linking the kitchen and entertainment area with the landscape. The indoor-outdoor space is now flooded with light and scenery. The sink was positioned to maximise the view of the spectacular garden and the glass splashback adds interest and wow factor by reflecting the outdoor garden into the kitchen, even when the cook is facing the other way.
The soft black kitchen cabinets offset the white making a strong statement and also prevents glare.
Clean lines and colour contrast provide the desired sophisticated elegance and touch of class.
